Pain is a pervasive problem in America—specifically orthopedic pain.

Musculoskeletal pain contributes substantially to morbidity, mortality, disability, demands on the healthcare system, employer productivity loss, and more.

Orthopedic pain is a global burden—and the prevalence of chronic pain is growing. More than 10 million Americans suffer from chronic pain.

Orthopedic Surgery Should Be a Last Resort, Not a Standard of Care

Orthopedic and chronic pain are contributors in why  four out of five employees prefer additionahealthcare benefits to a raise.

For employers, a workforce in pain means an increase—or overuse—of their healthcare plan. There is increasing evidence gap showing orthopedic surgeries are performed at higher volumes despite research indicating that such surgeries are overused or altogether ineffective.

During a global pandemic, adding an alternative to orthopedic surgery for employees may not have been on top of the priority list for a majority of businesses.

With healthcare demands expected to continue to increase over the next few years, forward- thinking companies are looking for strategies and solutions that bring higher value—at lower costs. In the anticipated future state of the economy, Regenexx is poised to offer exactly the kind of transformative care that businesses will need.

In the second quarter of 2021, Regenexx received a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 53.9. The national average score for healthcare providers is 27, roughly half as high as the Regenexx score. Net Promoter Scores provide a metric of patient satisfaction based on the question: On a scale of one to ten, how likely are you to recommend a Regenexx procedure to a friend or family member.

Corporate Spotlight

President, Employee Benefits Operations
Hylant Group Inc., insurance and brokerage services

How are your clients choosing what strategies to curb the growth of musculoskeletal disorders?
Cost is king. Musculoskeletal disorders are the second largest company expenditure next to payroll. Benefits such as Regenexx can help keep costs under control so that employers do not have to raise deductibles or increase employee contributions.

How much time and research did you conduct before adding Regenexx to your self- funded policy?
Our company did quite a bit of due diligence. We understand that it takes time for something to move from investigational to full approval. We spent hours talking with the folks from Regenexx and with various physicians to better understand the landscape of regenerative medicine.

How has Regenexx been received by your clients and by your own employees at Hylant?
I think Regenexx’s high Net Promoter Score is because of the overall experience they provide. In a time of heightened insecurity for individuals going under the knife, Regenexx provides for the whole-patient experience—from the first inquiry to the final procedure and beyond.

Our employees have seen significant results from Regenexx procedures. Reduced pain, and short recovery times mean that they are returning to work, exercising, and doing what they love much sooner than if they had instead received surgical procedures.

How has adding Regenexx as a step in care helped Hylant?
We currently have 16 companies carrying a Regenexx healthcare plan. Among those 16, there have been 82 procedures, and only 14 individuals went on to have surgery. From those 82 procedures, those companies with Regenexx plans in place saw major cost savings.

What would you tell other brokers and employers who have yet to introduce Regenexx and who are looking for ways to keep their workforce healthy while curbing their healthcare expenses?
I would tell them, “How are you going to feel when another broker brings Regenexx to one of your clients before you do?” The traction Regenexx is getting is real. Every brokerage firm has to make their own decisions in terms of:

  • Does this fit into their portfolio of product offerings
  • Mesh with their philosophy

Orthopedics is the first step for regenerative medicine. If we’re not looking at alternative therapies and thinking about how we can include them into our programs for our clients and integrate them into the self-funded medical plans, someone else will be.

A side effect of working from home? Back and neck pain.

It may be assumed the work-from-home desk setups are to blame. While they are a part of the problem, so is the lack of physical exercise and heightened levels of psychological stress.

The founder of Regenexx, Dr. Chris Centeno, M.D., describes what crainocervical instability (CCI) is, its signs and symptoms, and the difficulty in diagnosing it. You can read this and more in his newly published e-book, CCI 101: Understanding Craniocervical Instability and the Road to Recovery.
